Foster Grandparent Program

ABOUT US

The Foster Grandparent Program is sponsored locally by the Caddo Council on Aging, Inc. and is funded by the National Senior Service Corps. (Senior Corps), the Federal Agency which promotes volunteerism. While the FGP nationwide was started in 1965, the local Foster Grandparent Program has been in existence since 1981.

The State of LA Foster Grandparent Program is a part-time service program that is focused on helping young people who have special and exceptional needs. The FGP offers seniors ages 60 and older opportunities to serve as mentors, tutors, and caregivers for children and youth with special needs.

Louisiana Foster Granparent volunteers serve in our state community organization, public and private schools, hospitals, youth centers, shelter homes, daycare centers, head start programs and state development programs.

Foster Grandparents volunteers offers emotional support to children who have been abused and neglected, mentor troubled teenage and young mothers, and care for premature infants and children with physical disabilities. In the process, our FGP volunteers strengthen the communities by providing youth services that the community budget cannot afford and by building bridges across generations.

Foster Grandparents is administered at the local level by community service organizations, with 90% funding support provided by the federal government and 10% matching funds from the State of Louisiana.
