WHAT
ARE RESIDENT RIGHTS
They are rights that help ensure quality of care and quality of life for residents
of long-term care facilities. These rights include the rights every other
citizen enjoys, plus additional rights that have to do with life in a long-term
care facility. Here is a partial listing of these additional rights:
HEALTH
CARE

To exercise your civil and religious liberties

To exercise your rights as a resident and citizen

complain and make suggestions without fear of coercion or retaliation

To
be treated courteously, fairly an with the fullest measure of dignity

To
be free of mental and physical abuse

To
take part in various activities of the nursing home

To
be free not to perform work

To
choose a roommate, when possible

To
have your own clothing and possessions

To
manage your personal affairs, or if this is delegated to the facility, the

Federal Government protects the rights of residents through the constitution
and other special laws, and sets of standards for residents' care.

Each State also sets standards for residents' rights and care. The State
licenses long-term care facilities, administrators and certain health-care
workers, to help ensure the best care. In addition, local building, health
and fire codes help maintain safety and quality of care.
